Sancti Spíritus.- With an infant mortality rate of 1.1, this province continues to consolidate results in this vital program, which are true references for the country.
The territory closed December 2024 with a 3.6 that showed how much can be achieved in that sensitive indicator, even in the midst of such a complex situation with direct repercussions, of course, in the health sector.
In press statements, Dr. Francisco García González, Head of the Maternal and Infant Program at the Provincial Health Directorate, associated such progress to a stable work in the process of reevaluation of pregnant women and children under one year of age, by qualified teams; the strengthening of the genetics network, multidisciplinary consultations to patients with intrauterine growth retardation, intersectoriality, and improvement of strategies for critical maternal care, among other care.
Thus, of the 903 births registered so far this year (lower than the same period last year), only one death has occurred, as a result of methylmalonic aciduria, a congenital condition characterized by high lethality, even in developed countries.
In any case, managers and specialists do not trust or neglect important issues such as low birth weight (slightly above the index established by the nation); teenage pregnancy, with a higher incidence in Jatibonico, Taguasco, La Sierpe and the rural area of the main municipality; as well as the rigorous follow-up of pregnant women, so that they comply with the admission protocols and receive specialized attention in case they present diabetes, hypertension or other conditions that may cause complications.
The Neonatology Service of the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital shows a survival rate of over 98% in serious patients (the country demands 96%) and a survival rate of 96.5% (also above).
