Guantánamo.- The Verde Turquino Lavado, one of the products that the Guantánamo-based Café Asdrúbal López Coffee Processing Company took to the 20th ExpoCaribe 2025 Fair, deserved the Hecho en Cuba (Made in Cuba) award.
To award it, among other parameters required by ISO standards, the environmental conditions of the natural cultivation scenario, its innocuous properties and the safety and health of the work in support of its producers were taken into account.
Body, aroma, flavor, acidity and texture of the bean are among the attributes of this coffee from Guantánamo, which stood out among the other aspirants to the aforementioned ExpoCaribe award.
These properties make it an exclusive product, influenced by the terrain, climate, geography and a productive culture of more than eight decades, Osmel de la Cruz, director of Asdrúbal López, told Granma.
At an altitude of 600 meters above sea level, on the northern slope of Guantánamo, Verde Turquino Lavado is produced exactly in La Tagua, Manuel Tames municipality, a plateau of red ferrallitic soil under an annual average temperature of 25 to 26 degrees and a rainfall regime that exceeds 1,500 millimeters per year.
Hecho en Cuba is added to other awards obtained in previous editions of ExpoCaribe by the Verde Turquino Lavado coffee, and increases the prestige of what in 2024 was the only Cuban product that managed to enter such a demanding market as the German one, and remains there.
This award recognizes the excellence of national productions of local origin with high quality standards.
Because of its attributes, Osmel de la Cruz believes, this variant of the bean could aspire to a Denomination of Origin, a category that in the case of the Island is certified by the Cuban Industrial Property Office, and that would multiply the value of the product in the foreign market.
Notwithstanding the pleasant news, it is still a debt that coffee is enough, at least to return one day to that standard family basket that does not require a grain of supreme delicacy.
