The President of the National Defense Council, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, recognized this weekend the combatants of the FARs and the MININT who have carried out hundreds of rescue operations in the eastern part of the country, and affirmed that to erase the enormous damage caused by Melissa, "a great hurricane of work and a lot of cooperation" will be needed.
Erasing the traces of Melissa will not be an easy task. The rains associated with the powerful meteorological phenomenon have caused unprecedented flooding in some areas, requiring the evacuation of thousands of people in risky rescue operations by air, boat, and train.
The president of the National Defense Council recognized the combatants of the FARs and the MININT for their admirable skill and heroism in carrying out this important mission.
Over the weekend, hundreds of residents from the Granma municipality of Río Cauto, affected by the dangerous floods, continued to arrive in Las Tunas. Several evacuation centers have been set up in the provincial capital and in the municipalities of Jobabo and Colombia to ensure the protection of some 2,400 people.
The health response in the areas affected by the hurricane has also been intensified, with an emphasis on care for vulnerable communities. Noteworthy measures include the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance, the deployment of medical brigades, the distribution of essential supplies, and the activation of prevention protocols in case of possible outbreaks.
Transportation Minister Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila reported on Facebook about the severe damage to the railway line to Santiago de Cuba. The damage includes the Central Line, between kilometers 833 and 834.5.
Brigades from the electricity and telecommunications sectors are working tirelessly in several cities and communities in the east, with the aim of restoring these services as quickly as possible.
