
Less than a month to go until the 37th International Film Festival of New Latin American Cinema overtakes movie theaters throughout the capital for 10 days. Just like every year, the event will showcase works by cinematographers from across the region and world, with a large variety of national productions from both the competition and non-competition selections, scheduled to be shown during this year’s edition.
Speaking during a press conference on November 10, Roberto Smith, president of the Cuban InstituteofCinematographicArt andIndustry (ICIAC) reported that the institution will present four films: one documentary and three animations.
Competing in the feature-length film category will be La cosa humana, by Gerardo Chijona; Cuba libre, by Jorge Luis Sánchez and Vuelos prohibidos, a film by Rigoberto López and the only one of the three to have been premiered thus far. The directorial debut category includes Bailando con Margot, by director Arturo Santana, while competing in the documentary section is the previously released Últimos días de una casa, by Lourdes de los Santos Matos.
ICAIC Animation Studios will be presenting Xip Zérep, by Juan Padrón which could later be turned into an animated series staring this unique superhero; Aventuras de Juan Quinquín by young director Alexander Rodríguez and El camarón encantado based on the story by José Martí published in La edad de oro – produced by Holguín’s Anima Studios and directed by Adrián López Morín.
Showing among the non-competition selection are Alejandro Gil’s feature-length film La emboscada, which was recently premiered in cinemas nationwide; and Una luz de inteligencia y amor, a documentary by Regino Miguel Oliver Blanco, among others.
In addition to ICAIC productions, other independent or alternative Cuban films will also be shown during the festival, such as El acompañante, by Pável Giroud; La obra del siglo, by Carlos Machado Quintela; Jessica Rodríguez’s Espejuelos oscuros; Caballos, by Fabián Suárez, and Café amargo, by Rigoberto Jiménez.
