OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF CUBA CENTRAL COMMITTEE

Following the famous Buddy Bears expo at the beginning of this year, Havana’s Plaza de San Francisco de Asís will soon host a collection of impressive sculptures once again, this time in the shape of mythical Mexican dog Xico, a traveler’s companion.

The 16 pieces that make up the collection entitled, Travesías de Xico por América Latina, (Xico’s travels through Latin America), saw the participation of eight Cuban artists and others from Panama, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico, the creator of the project, Cristina Pineda, told Prensa Latina.

“With respect to other exhibitions of Xico, this one has the magic of rescuing legends of the continent through this character, a kind of voice of wisdom of the people.”

Now we want to enrich it through collaboration with children and young people, who can also create clay figures of Xico, Pineda said.

“That the works are in the streets is very important because this allows many people to interact with them. Applications for mobile devices will also be made available regarding the legends surrounding this figure and books on the subject.”

Sculptures of Xico are located in Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and also in important art galleries in Switzerland, Shanghai and New York. In Cuba, their presence will be permanent as Pineda will donate the works in this exhibition, allowing them to be put on display in other cities across the island.

From November 12 to December 12 this year, the 16 figures will be on show in the Plaza de San Francisco de Así, also forming part of the events to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of Havana, on November 16.
