
The National Council of Visual Arts has granted its 2021 National Prize to artist Alberto Lescay in recognition of his outstanding work as a sculptor, engraver, painter, and draftsman.
Lescay was born in Santiago de Cuba on December 20, 1950, the city where he has developed his professional work. He is the author of emblematic works including the city’s Antonio Maceo Plaza de la Revolución architectural complex, and monuments to the Maroon, and the Mother of the Homeland, Mariana Grajales, among others.
His work also includes small-format sculptures and pictorial series that have been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums in Cuba and other countries, including Mexico, the United States, Canada, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Jamaica, Brazil, and Russia.
Lescay is a member of the Union of Cuban Writers and Artists and the International Association of Visual Artists, and over the course of his career, has received many significant awards and distinctions.
