Cuba demonstrated its dominance in the canoeing event of the 22nd Central American and Caribbean Games, held in Veracruz, winning eight gold and four silver medals, of a total of 12 up for grabs. Mexico secured three gold, four silver and four bronze medals; followed by Colombia (1-2-2); Venezuela (0-2-5); and Guatemala (0-0-1).

Cuban Amalia Obregón’s performance must be highlighted given that she won the C-1 200 meters (1:02.261 minutes) having only been practicing the sport for barley one year. It was a tight race with Mexican Abigail Morales (1:02.464) right on Obregón’s heels, and third place going to Guatemalan Clara López (1:05.059).
Reinier Torres and Fidel Vargas also won gold in the K-2 200 meters with a time of 35.935 seconds, faster than Venezuelans Antonio Oropeza and José Ramos´ 37.271 seconds and Mexicans Jordan Salazar and Santos Marroquín’s 37.
