
Cuba achieved outstanding results on July 6, during the Sotteville-Les-Rouen International Athletics Meet, winning several gold and silver medals, adding to the island’s achievements in this current season.
Cuba’s Denia Caballero won gold in the discus event, registering a throw of 67.25 meters, an event record, during the final which saw her teammate Yaimé Pérez (66.42 meters - a personal best), take the silver.
Meanwhile, Yarisley Silva triumphed in the pole vault, with a leap of 4.66 meters.
Silva had a rough start, failing to reach 4.46 meters but recomposed herself to make 4.56 on her first attempt, leading the competition from then on. This position was ratified by her subsequent 4.66 meter jump, which clinched her the title.

Greece’s Ekaterina Stefanidi, who accompanied the Cuban on the podium, taking second place, easily reached 4.56 meters but struggled with the subsequent heights; missing 4.66 meters and thus having to settle for silver. Third place went to Sandi Morris from the U.S. with a jump of 4.46 meters.
Cuba’s Rose Mary Almanza delighted fans from the Caribbean island after winning the 800 meters sprint in 1:59.24 minutes, beating Chanelle Price (2:00.36) and Latavia Thomas (2:00.95) from the U.S. Sahily Diago from Matanzas came in fourth clocking 2:00.99 minutes.
The 110 meters hurdles saw Yordan O’Farrill take silver in 13.41 seconds, only surpassed by Darien Garfield (13.28) of France, with Petr Svoboda (13.44) from Czechoslovakia coming in third.
In other results, Alexis Copello won the triple jump with a leap 16.76 meters, beating Frenchman Benjamin Compaore (16.61) and Nigerian Tosin Oke (16.59) in his last attempt.
