
Led by wrestling giant Mijaín López and heptathlon champion Yorgelis Rodríguez, the last group of athletes representing Cuba at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games returned to the island on Monday.
The President of the Cuban Olympic Committee, José Ramón Fernández, welcomed each of the members of the delegation as they arrived at the José Martí International Airport, emphasizing that the Cuban people eagerly awaited them, recognizing “all the courage and effort that you have demonstrated in each competition.”
He also took the opportunity to inform them of the major events in the country during their absence including the 10th Congress of the Young Communist League and the celebrations in Santiago de Cuba for the city’s 500th anniversary and 62nd anniversary of the assaults on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Barracks.
Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the whole delegation, Yorgelis, who won the last gold medal for the island in the Canadian city, expressed thanks for all the expressions of support and encouragement received over the last two weeks.
Finally, each athlete was awarded the Seal of Dignity as a symbol of fidelity, the spirit of defending the homeland, loyalty to the Party, the people and the Revolution.
