OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF CUBA CENTRAL COMMITTEE

CUBA’S Domadores team returned to take the title at the World Series of Boxing this June 4, beating the British Lionhearts 9-1 at the final of the 6th edition of the series.

The final result in Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan, saw the island’s team improve on its second place of the previous season and regain the title achieved in the fourth edition, when Cuba debuted in the competition.

The outcome of the final was clear as Yosbany Veitía (52kg) outstripped Muhammad Ali 3-0, after Yoahnys Argilagos (49kg), Robeisy Ramírez (56kg), Yasnier Toledo (64kg), Arlen López (75kg) and Erislandy Savón (91kg) all triumphed over their respective opponents.

Veitía set the pace in the first three rounds, securing a final score of 2-1 against an opponent of greater stature who could not reverse the outcome, despite coming back strong in the last two rounds.

Argilagos finished like the greats employing good combinations to seal a deserved 3-0 win over Galal Yafai, while Robeisy exuded momentum and finished with Peter McGrail through technical knockout in the third round, to celebrate his eleventh win of the Series.

Toledo upped his game to the detriment of Dalton Grant Smith, with a score of 3-0, while Arlen outstripped Troy Williamson by technical knockout, also in the third round.

Savón needed just one round to deal with Lawrence Okolie, for a total of 21 wins, to conclude the team’s perfect performance in the divisions of the C-1 format.

The success of Veitía was repeated in the punches of Lázaro Álvarez (60kg), Roniel Iglesias (69kg) and Julio César La Cruz (81kg), before the Lionheart’s Frazer Clarke (+91kg) fulfilled expectations defeating Cuba’s Leinier Peró.

Lázaro was superior to Luke McCormack, winning 3-0, Iglesias beat Ekow Essuman by technical knockout in the second round, and Julio thrashed Thomas Whittaker-Hart 3-0, but Clarke prevented a clean sweep with a technical knockout in the fourth round against Peró of Camagüey.

The Cubans’ final feat was the culmination of a solid performance throughout the Series, marked by clear superiority, with a total of 27 wins and only three losses in the preliminary phase and a clean slate of 10-0 in both the quarter and semi-finals.
