Cuban Volleyball Federation confirms conviction of players in Finland › Sports › Granma - Official voice of the PCC

As anticipated, the sentence passed by the District Court of Pirkanmaa, Finland, following the closed door trial involving six Cuban volleyball players charged with aggravated rape against an adult female Finnish citizen which concluded August 31, was announced today, September 20.
Abraham Alfonso Gavilán, Ricardo Norberto Calvo Manzano, Rolando Cepeda Abreu and Osmani Santiago Uriarte Mestre were sentenced to five years in prison.
Luis Sosa Tomás Sierra was sentenced to three and half years in prison.
The Court also ordered the individuals pay the victim a total of 24,000 euros in compensation.
Dariel Albo Miranda was acquitted and retuned to Cuba following his prior release.
The Cuban Embassy in Finland has at all times provided consular services to the five convicted individuals in the country. Meanwhile, Ariel Saínz Rodríguez, president of the Cuban Volleyball Federation has remained in Finland in constant contact with the Embassy, those accused and their lawyers.
Both the Cuban Volleyball Federation and INDER have maintained in regular contact with the families of the players.
The convicted men have the right to appeal the decision.
