The national flag was deposited in the hands of Alfredo Despaigne, fourth in the line-up for both Granma and the national team, during a ceremonial send-off held in Havana's José Martí Memorial yesterday, February 16, for the team preparing to play in the 4th World Baseball Classic, March 7-19.

Despaigne had as his escorts Lázaro Blanco and Carlos Benítez, fellow members of the national title-winning Sorrels of Granma, who are also carrying on their shoulders the people's hopes for a good performance in this demanding competition.

Another leader of the Granma team in the national play-offs, catcher Frank Camilo Morejón, read the oath expressing the players' and coaches' awareness of the great responsibility they have to the Cuban people, for whom, he stated, "We will struggle until our last breath for victory, respecting fair play."
