Cuban canoeists Fernando Dayán Jorge and Serguey Torres won gold and silver respectively in the C1- 5,000 meters event this May 27, on the last day of theCanoe Sprint World Cup in the German city of Duisburg.
The Caribbean athletes placed first and second on the second and last day of the circuit, to match last year’s result in Portugal, where Serguey took gold and Fernando silver.
On Sunday however, the latter beat out his fellow teammate and competitor with a time of 21:45 minutes to Torres’ 21:46 according to Jit.
This result says a lot about the condition of both athletes as they look to this year’s Central American and Caribbean Games, taking place July 19 through August 3, in Barranquilla, Colombia.
Meanwhile, bronze went to Pengfe Zheng of China with a time of 22:02 minutes. Also coming in under the 23 minute mark were Aivis Tints of Hungary (22:21.322), and Canada’s Connor Fitzpatrick (22:55.680).
“It’s a great result for our sport. These guys are making history,” stated Cuba’s national Canoeing Commissioner Alejandro Hamze Ruiz.
The duo also won silver in the C2 event on May 25 (3:31.645), only surpassed by World Champions Yul Oeltze and Peter Kretschmer (3:30.948) of Germany.
Meanwhile, bronze went to Hao Liu and Hao Wang of China (3:32.444).
