JUAN Miguel Echevarría’s jump of 8.92 meters, (not recognized due to favorable wind speed) was the best of the Cuba Cup that concluded March 10, on the warm-up track at Havana’s Panamericano Stadium.

On the final day, in addition to Echevarría’s impressive accomplishment, Rose Mary Almanza won her second gold medal of the games, winning the 1,500-meter race in 4:25.62 minutes.

Other noteworthy results include victories in the long hurdles by Leandro Zamora (50.17 seconds) and Zurian Hechevarría (56.96), in their respective male and female races.

In the shot put, Yaniuvis López dominated with no problem, throwing for 17.82 meters, while Elianis Despaigne won the hammer trials with a throw of 66.90 meters. Adriana Díaz accumulated 6,293 points to reign in the heptathlon, although she did not reach the total needed to qualify for the Doha World Cup.

This competition closes the first stage of training for Cuban athletes en route to the Pan American Games in Lima.
