The 11 medals won by the Cuban delegation to the 2019 Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi reflect the spirit of human solidarity inspired by the Revolution.
For the first time, the event was hosted by a Middle East nation, the United Arab Emirates. Among more than 7,000 athletes from 190 nations, competing in 24 sports, the Cuban delegation of just eight young athletes put on record just how important every human being is on this island.
While the three gold medals, five silver and three bronze secured by Cuba attest to an impressive performance and efficient results, these wins are also of paramount importance to these special athletes who are the pride of a homeland that is committed to inclusion.
Weightlifter Yaritza Parrado (VCL) began Cuba’s triumphal path with two gold medals and the same number of silver. The close of the event saw another two medals, with gold for long-jumper Irina Lopez (GRA), with her “leap” of 4.40 meters, followed by runner-up Mandy Mojena, who excelled in the 800 meters in just 2:04.05 minutes.
Also contributing to the outstanding performance were Yuly Esther Ortega (ART) and Roberto Fernández (MAY) in athletics; swimmers Yurisnel Rojas and Katiuska Patiño, both from Las Tunas, and weightlifter Yoandy Beltrán (SSP).
