SANTIAGO de Cuba’s Yaimé Pérez was crowned queen of the discus in the Diamond League, for the second consecutive time, defeating her great rival, Croatian Sandra Perkovic, throwing for 68.27 meters, in a series with only one attempt below 65 meters.

Perkovic sent the discus soaring for 66 m. Although she had taken six successive Diamonds during the 2012-2017 period, she validated the distance with only three attempts in Brussels.

The other Cuban discus athlete in competition, Denia Caballero from Villa Clara, with the second best distance for the season (69.20) in the Latin American meet in Huelva, Spain, was not at the level she has displayed during the Diamond circuit, but added 30 units, placing fourth (63.53), behind German Kristin Pudenz (63.73).In the pole vault, the Yarisley Silva from Pinar del Rio was far from her best mark of the year reached at the Pan American Games in Lima, 4.75 meters.

This time she was not able to vault over 4.63 meters, and finished sharing eighth place with Sandi Morris from the United States, in a contest that saw Greek favorite Katerina Stefanidi take the title with her 4.83 meters.Cuba with its two titles, including the one captured by long jumper Juan Miguel Echevarría (8.65 meters, best of the year, August 28 in Zurich), is preparing for the World Cup in Doha, Qatar, underway through October 6.
