
CAMAGÜEY: The reopening, after a capital renovation, of the chess academy, here, now known as the José Raúl Capablanca Provincial Training Center, is among the projects included in a program underway in this territory for the gradual recovery of all its sports facilities.
Located in the area of the provincial capital city declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity, by UNESCO in 2008, the chess center now enjoys excellent conditions, for both daily practice by fans and special events at all levels.
Among other services, a talent school has been operating there for 13 years, attended by children selected from city's primary schools, from whose ranks emerged Gran Maestro Carlos Daniel Albornoz Cabrera, the current national champion. After emphasizing the benefits of the facility, National Master Eliécer García Viñas explained that, in addition to the competition and training rooms, added was a computer laboratory for the preparation of high-performance players, which will soon have an internet connection.
Mario Núñez Caballero, provincial director of the Cuban Institute for Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation, Inder, reported that, as a result of the construction fever, an athletics training center will also be inaugurated before the end of the year, with dormitories, kitchen-dining room, and gymnasium, located adjacent to the Patrice Lumumba athletic complex.
According to the director, work is being completed simultaneously on the construction of stands at the football stadium, with a capacity of 700 seats, and on the comprehensive repair of the sports motel, which will include, among other improvements, greater comfort for its 24 rooms, and better quality services.
Also o be completed by the end of the year, are renovations underway of classrooms, dormitories and other facilities at the Physical Education Teachers School, which will allow for expanding enrollment by more than 170 students.
