Cuba’s national wrestling commissioner, Luis de la Portilla, announced on his Facebook page that national teams in the sport’s different modalities are moving their training camp to a center in the province of Sancti Spíritus.

The Cuban athletes traveled to Sancti Spíritus on January 18, and among those participating are wrestlers with the best chances of qualifying for the Tokyo-2020 Olympic Games.

Prior to this report, Portilla, also president of the Cuban Wrestling Federation, had announced that the members of the national team who intend to participate in the Henry Deglane Grand Prix, in French city of Nice, would not make the trip, given the complicated epidemiological situation in the Cuban capital and the strict isolation protocols they must abide by in France.

The athletes summoned to the training center in Sancti Spíritus are Greco-Roman wrestlers Mijaín López, Ismael Borrero, Oscar Pino, Daniel Grégorich, Gabriel Rosillo, Luis A. Orta, Yosvani Peña, Antonio Durán, Ángel Pacheco and Reinier Monteagudo, under the guidance of coaches Raúl J. Trujillo, Filiberto Azcuy and Carlos Ulacia.

In the freestyle, Reineris Andreu, Alejandro Valdés, Geandry Garzón, Reineris Salas, Franklin Marén and Yunieski Torreblanca will take part, along with trainers Julio Mendieta and Rafael Martínez; while the women will be Yusneylys Guzmán, Lianna Montero, Yudaris Sánchez and Milaymis Marín, under the tutelage of Filiberto Delgado and Wilberto Leal.

Cuba currently has 12 wrestlers qualified for the summer event in the Japanese capital, including the Greco-Roman team, whose members have all secured their Olympic spot. In March and April, the world Olympic qualifying tournament will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, where Cuba’s Andreu, Torreblanca in the freestyle and Marín, among women, are looking to win a ticket to Tokyo.
