
The Cuban delegation put in an outstanding performance at the XIX Ibero-American Athletics Championship in Alicante, Spain, winning three gold medals, two silver and one bronze, on the final day of the event.
Discus thrower Yaimé Pérez prevailed with no problem, with a mark of 62.06 meters, well above that of Chilean Karen Gallardo (59.39) and Brazilian Andressa Oliveira de Morais (58.33), second and third in the event, respectively, with fourth place taken by Cuba’s Silinda Morales (57.97).
Young Cuban runner Greisys Robles won a remarkable victory in the 100 meter hurdles, finishing under 13 seconds for the first time, with a time of 12.93, while her compatriot Keily Pérez, came in second at 13.01 seconds .
In the triple jump, Leyanis Pérez set a personal record, 14.58 meters, the best outdoor performance so far this season, while the silver medal went to her teammate Liadagmis Povea (14.41).
After winning the men’s 100 meters earlier in the event, Shainer Reginfo took the bronze medal in the 200 meters, with a record of 21.01 seconds, confirming his excellent progress, surpassed on this occasion by only two other emerging speed stars, Dominicans Alexander Ogando (20.27) and Yancarlos Martínez (20.60).
Cuba concluded the XIX Ibero-American Athletics Championship in third place on the medal chart, with five gold medals, three silver and two bronze, behind Spain (14-8-8) and the Dominican Republic (6-5-3). (Sports news staff)
