Omara Durand, accompanied by her guide, Yuniol Kindelán, makes gold with her feet. In short, all the tracks she has stepped on have witnessed gold medals. In her case, the ambition that follows is to always be the best.
In many sporting disciplines, 10 is the perfect score. In parathletics, Omara Durand's definition, or the perfection of speed.
On September 5, Durand won her tenth Paralympic gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, winning the 100m T12. This new victory came on top of the 400m T12 in the Parisian capital.
The news is no less welcome, even though it was expected. "All victories are wonderful. I enjoy them to the fullest. I can't say that I enjoy one more than another, because I really enjoy them all in the same way", the champion told Olympics.com.
The Cuban, reigning champion and world record holder in the distance, gave no chances to her rivals in the final of the T12 category (visually impaired) and, together with Kindelán, stopped the clock in 11.81 seconds. She was escorted on the podium by Ukraine's Oksana Boturchuk (12.17) and Germany's Katrin Mueller-Rottgardt (12.26).
Durand's celebration at the Stade de France on Thursday was all smiles and applause. She still doesn't have it all, she is missing something: the 200m medal, which he will try to win tomorrow. Durand has already achieved the golden triplet in Rio-2016 and Tokyo-2020, and now she wants to endorse it in France.
"This is not the time to celebrate. We are celebrating what we just did now, but we still have the 200m, so we will celebrate all together," she sentenced.
About the news, the President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, wrote in his account on the social network X: "She arrived at his first Paralympic Games in Beijing-2008 and returned home without a medal. She was only 16 years old. Today Omara is the queen of speed in these events: 10 titles and it could be more. We feel a great pride for this heroic and tender Santiago de Cuba woman, congratulations, champion".
