Asunción.– There was no better way to end Monday night than with the echoing throw of Alejandra Mesa’s discus, which resounded through the city to celebrate Cuba’s haul on the opening day of athletics at the 2nd Junior Pan American Games.

Before Alejandra added gold to the tally, the podium at the Paraguayan Olympic Park stadium had already welcomed javelin throwers Leiker Cabrera and Claudia Guerrero, long jumper Rosmaiby Quesada, and the mixed 4x400 meter relay team—though none reached the top spot.

The greatest glory was reserved for the 20-year-old from Mayabeque, making her debut in an international competition. She secured it with an opening throw of 54.42 meters, unreachable for the rest of the contenders.

“It wasn’t the mark I wanted, but I did it,” she managed to say after her victory was confirmed. Overcome with emotion, she could say little more, recalling those who had supported her on the journey to this triumph.

“Especially my mom—she’s everything to me,” she said, dedicating the win to the person she considers her “driving force,” the one who offered unconditional support through every training session, always urging her to give her best. Her coach, Raúl Calderón, stood quietly by her side, avoiding the spotlight but equally thrilled by the unforgettable night they shared.

Thus, Cuban athletics wrapped up an excellent day, winning medals in all five events with medal potential. In addition to Alejandra’s gold, the team earned silver medals from Leiker, Rosmaiby, and the relay team, plus a bronze from Claudia.

Tuesday will bring more battles on the track and field, with seven finals scheduled. Several will feature Cuban athletes, including the men’s 100 meters, where Reynaldo Espinosa qualified with a time of 10.17 seconds. Also drawing attention will be the conclusion of the decathlon, where Josmi Sánchez leads with 3,982 points after five events.
