The General Secretary of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), George Mavrikos, arrived in Havana to attend Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro Ruz’s funeral, which will take place in Santiago de Cuba.
“For me it is an honor to be on the island, during such important days for his people and for the Revolution,” Mavrikos said during a press conference held this Friday, December 2, in the headquarters of the Cuban Workers’ Federation (CTC).
He noted that he had come as a representative of the 92 million workers from 126 countries represented in the WFTU, to express sincere condolences on the death of the Comandante en Jefe, whom he personally met.
Fidel is immortal, the secretary general of the world’s leading workers’ organization stated. “He will be with us over the coming centuries, with his light and example. The WFTU will defend his ideas of international solidarity and the struggle against imperialism, and always united with the people of Cuba and the CTC,” Mavrikos added.
In honor of the memory of Comandante Fidel Castro Ruz, the World Federation of Trade Unions and the CTC National Secretariat decided that in the framework of the celebrations for May Day 2017, Havana will host the meeting of the WFTU Presidential Council.
“Fidel is an example of dignity, optimism and struggle. We will dedicate the next meeting of the Council to his legacy,” Mavrikos explained.
During the event, WFTU leaders from 55 nations will visit the country to address issues related to the global working class, seeking to build further alliances, in search of a just society without exploitation of man by man.
