The President of the Councils of State and Ministers of Cuba, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, described the terrorist attack against the French weekly, Charlie Hebdo, which killed 12 people as atrocious.

“I ask you to extend my deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” the Cuban president said in a message sent to his French counterpart, François Hollande, according to diplomatic sources, as reported by Prensa Latina.

Mercedes López Acea, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and vice president of the Council of State, also expressed solidarity with the French people following the attack on the headquarters of the weekly publication.

On behalf of the government and people of Cuba, the First Secretary of the PCC in Havana signed the book of condolences opened at the French Embassy in the capital, to express support following the death of 12 people and a dozen wounded.

López Acea conveyed solidarity with the French people and the families of the victims and expressed Cuba’s condemnation of acts of terrorism, which have also claimed many lives in the Caribbean nation.

Representatives of the diplomatic missions of Mexico, Uruguay, Sweden, Bulgaria, as well as the UN Food and Agriculture Organization in Cuba, also signed the book of condolences.

The book will remain open from 12 noon until four in the afternoon everyday until Wednesday 14, in order to enable Cuban and foreign citizens to express their condolences.
