CARACAS.— Foreign ministers and other senior officials of member countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (Alba-TCP) yesterday reaffirmed their unanimous position rejecting the destabilizing attempts against progressive and democratic governments of the region.
The delegations at the 4th Extraordinary Meeting of the ALBA-TCP Political Council articulated a joint action plan to confront right-wing and imperialist conspiracies, principally targeting Ecuador and El Salvador.
Among the agreements of the 11 states were the establishment of commissions to provide direct support to the nations under threat; the condemnation of destabilization before the international community and bodies such as Unasur, CELAC and Caricom; as well as a worldwide hashtag campaign on Twitter on August 13 against coup attempts in the region.
President Nicolás Maduro stressed the role of Cuba and its Revolution as an example of resistance against U.S. imperialism and praised the island’s dignity throughout the process of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations with the United States.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez described the meeting as significant and timely, noting “the mobilizing of the consciousness of our peoples and joint efforts in defense of self-determination” as effective alternatives to confront “the onslaught of imperialism, of multinationals and the oligarchy.”
The Political Council also established positions on other international conflicts, denouncing imperialist intervention in Libya and the humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean Sea, a product of the displacement caused by wars in North Africa and the Middle East.
