
WASHINGTON.— Ferguson police arrested around 20 people yesterday, August 11, during activities to commemorate one year since the death of 18-year-old African American Michael Brown, reported PL.
On the fourth consecutive night of demonstrations, protesters threw frozen bottles of water at police officers, prompting them to order the crowd to disperse or face arrest.
Local authorities, who declared a state of emergency, threatened to impose a curfew if protests continued.
"Safety, our top priority, is now compromised. This is no longer a peaceful protest. Participants are now unlawfully assembled," stated a police spokesperson early this morning, while newspaper Saint Louis Post Dispatch states that over 100 people have been arrested since demonstrations began.
Yesterday, almost 200 people marched from the church to the federal court in the city of Saint Louis, where the Ferguson is located, with signs calling for Justice Department intervention, given the events on Sunday night.
This Tuesday, the police reported that charges have been filed against 18-year-old Tyrone Harris who remains in a critical state in hospital, after being gravely injured by police following an altercation with officers on Sunday night.
According to the police Harris fired four shots at plainclothes detectives parked in a van who returned fire, hitting the young man.
Two other youths, one 17 and the other 19, were wounded in the early morning hours on Monday by shots fired from a moving car. The individuals were hospitalized and are expected to survive.
Ferguson Mayor James Knowles, called for calm and said the police would respond to any new disturbances
