KINGSTON.—Petrocaribe, a decade after its emergence as a mechanism of energy cooperation, is taking action to address social security for the peoples of its 19 member nations.

At their 10th Summit, Caribbean leaders agreed to develop a plan for the coming decade, 2015-2025, to ensure social security, prioritizing better responses to challenges posed by natural disasters and climate-related problems.

According to PL, Petrocaribe is looking to consolidate an economic zone in the region based on the strategic alliance, which has accomplished its original goal of ensuring availability of energy and is expanding its focus.

During the meeting in Montego Bay, Jamaica, leaders emphasized the accomplishments of the group established in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, on June 29, 2005, on the initiative of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, to ensure Caribbean nations’ access to energy sources at fair prices based on solidarity and social justice. The organization coordinates energy policies regarding petroleum and its derivatives; promotes efficient use of electricity; and supports the development of alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power.

Salvador Valdés Mesa, a vice president of Cuba’s Councils of State and Ministers led Cuba’s delegation to the event.
