
Quito.— With the presentation of the results of the five thematic workshops which took place during the event, the first CELAC-China forum on Science, Technology and Innovation ended yesterday, August 17, in Ecuador, reported PL.
The encounter, which saw the participation of representatives of CELAC’s 33 member countries, and a broad Chinese delegation led by the country’s Minister of Science and Technology, Wang Gang, was held at the headquarters of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) on the outskirts of Quito.
According to Ecuadorian officials, the objective of the forum is to establish an effective dialogue with Beijing focused on information management, science, technology and innovation.
The topics addressed in the workshops included innovation ecosystems, transferal of technology, biodiversity and development, science and green development based on technology; and science, technology and innovation for business success.
During the event inauguration, Ecuador’s Vice President, Jorge Glas, urged Latin American and Caribbean nations to learn from China’s experience, establish agreements and solidify positions.
Meanwhile, René Ramírez, the country’s minister of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, stated that efforts - part of a common agenda - are being undertaken at a regional and sub-regional level.
According to the representative, discussions by the bloc included: lines of investigation to strengthen cooperation and which translate into real results, such as the creation of a publishing house, publication indexing systems and a science and technology award in order to promote research in these fields in Latin American and Caribbean countries, PL also reports.
In regards to China, he stated that various areas of potential multilateral cooperation to develop projects of mutual benefit have been identified.
Parallel to the first CELAC-China Science, Technology and Innovation forum, which officially ended August 17, some 25 Chinese businesses presented their products at the Unasur headquarters.
Noteworthy among exhibitors were Huawei Technologies, Inspur Group, Torch High Technology Industry Deveploment, China Academy of Space Technology, and Opzoon Technology, leaders in the transfer of technology and scientific development, reports Xinhua.
