Paris.— UNESCO praised Cuban cooperation in the fight against Ebola in several African countries, as well as its achievements in science and education.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) 2030 outlook science report, presented during the organization’s 38th general conference, recognized that the island has sent hundreds of doctors and nurses to various African countries as an expression of solidarity with the people of the continent.

Cuba’s health professionals undertook an honorable mission in the region, saving over 400 lives and ensuring that the mortality rate did not exceed 24.4%, it noted.

According to Prensa Latina the Ebola outbreak which afflicted several West African countries caused the death of some 8,000 people, from March to December 2014.

The report also highlights that Cuba is the number one Latin American country which allocates over one percent of its GDP to Higher Education, with 4.47%, followed by Bolivia with 1.61%.

It also notes that Cuba is a popular destination with students from the continent, with its higher education intuitions receiving more than 17,000 pupils over the last five years.
