
Speaking to the press gathered in Quito for the IV CELAC Summit, starting this afternoon January 27, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos announced that CELAC countries are seeking joint action with respect to tackling drug trafficking.
The President also stressed that very important steps are being taken toward peace in Colombia, a peace he said would benefit the whole continent. He added that the issue of peace in Colombia, following a conflict lasting more than 50 years, will be one of the focuses of discussions during this CELAC Summit.
The Colombian peace talks have been ongoing in Havana since 2012, with a number of significant agreements reached regarding agricultural development policy, political participation, ending the illegal drugs trade, victims’ rights and justice. Cuba and Norway act as guarantor nations to the peace process, with Venezuela and Chile serving as accompanying nations
