The United Nations.– António Guterres, United Nations secretary general stated that “Racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism or Islamophobia are…poisoning our societies,” during a press briefing at the organization’s headquarters in New York, August 16.
During the encounter Guterres called on the international community and its actors to condemn racism and xenophobia “everywhere and every time.”
The diplomat reiterated his position in the wake of violent acts which occurred during recent protests led by white supremacists in the U.S. city of Charlottesville, Virginia.
The UN secretary General also stressed the importance of tolerance, respect for others, and recognition of diversity, while condemning “all forms of irrationality… be it in the United States or everywhere else in the world,” he noted.
Earlier that day UN experts expressed their concern over rising racism and xenophobia in the United States.
