Quito.– The fourth round of the public phase of peace talks between the Colombian government and National Liberation Army (ELN) began October 25 in Quito, according to a statement from the Ecuadoran Foreign Ministry.
Speaking at the capital’s Universidad Católica, Ecuador’s guarantor to the talks Juan Meriguet, highlighted progress made to date, including the temporary bilateral ceasefire, which is set to end January 9, 2018.
“The establishment of a mechanism to verify the ceasefire agreement enabled delegates from the ELN to travel to Bogotá for the first time, to work alongside the Colombian government,” reads the statement.
Also agreed was the decision to hold the “preparatory dialogue hearings” among Colombian civil society, which had previously taken place in Ecuador, in Colombia itself.
