
Foreign Ministers of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) reiterated May 15 their firm support for the lifting of the U.S. blockade against Cuba and condemnation of the Helms-Burton Act, and highlighted the importance of the longstanding and close relations of their countries with the island, characterized by technical cooperation, commercial and political relations, and mutual support in multilateral forums.
During the 22nd Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) of the Caribbean Community, held in Saint George’s, Grenada, CARICOM-Cuba relations and the preparations for the Sixth Ministerial Meeting, to be held in Guyana on June 14, were reviewed.
Recently, the member countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), ratified their vocation of peace and respect for international law and rejected the activation by Washington of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act against Cuba.
ALBA-TCP member states denounced the extraterritorial impact of the sanctions against Cuba, and called for the maintenance of friendly relations among nations, without the use of force or interference in the internal affairs of any sovereign state, in accordance with the postulates of the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.
Through a statement, the Cuban Interfaith Platform also called to continue working for the strengthening of peace and the unity of the Cuban family, through interreligious dialogue in Cuba and with other nations, and on the basis of respect, coexistence, equity and fraternity within religious and cultural diversity, “to build a world without violence, without wars, without hunger, without interference and with equal opportunities, with everyone and for the good of all.”
