The 1970s were not only the period of counterculture and hippies, but also of the crisis of the monopolist system.The United States was losing hegemonic control by changing its dollar for paper, while the former USSR was in the process of moving closer to the positions of the Third World countries.The need to reinvent itself led to neoliberalism and;therefore, to a new method of intervening in countries to defend their views on “democracy and human rights”.
If the document approved by the UN mentions both universal and individual rights, the capitalists appropriated the latter to continue dividing the world into spheres of influence. They used three key elements: the generation of negative state of opinion in the target country, diplomatic pressures, and the use of non-conventional warfare modalities. Basically, the purpose of these is to discredit any project that does not meet their demands, and to eliminate any project influenced by Socialism.
Once the goal has been achieved, respect for human rights becomes unimportant.There are fresh in the memory, the abuses in the prison of Abu Ghraib in Iraq, the massacres in the Central American war for which those responsible have never been judged, and, to make the list short, the most recent crimes in Bolivia and the daily killings in Colombia nowadays.
Many Cubans remember the deplorable actions of US officials, who forced different countries to vote against Cuba in order to justify their aggressive policy in the now dissolved UN Commission on Human Rights, which loss of prestige on many sensitive topics such as the right to self-determination led to its replacement.
Hypocrisy continues being a capitalist practice, with US at the top, whose government would rather allocate funds to attack and interfere in the internal affairs in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela than dealing with the right to life in their country. A country whose government’s poor management of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused the death of more than 250,000 citizens.
Rescuing the true essence of all rights for humanity remains today the ethical choice of peoples to save the human race.
