MOSCOW, Russia.— In front of the bronze sculpture of Fidel, in the square that bears his name in Moscow, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, dedicated a heartfelt tribute, on behalf of the Cuban people, to the historic leader of the Revolution, and laid a wreath.
The official Cuban delegation arrived in the morning at Fidel Castro Square, in the Sokol district, where the monument to the Commander-in-Chief has become a pilgrimage site for Cubans arriving from the Homeland. But not only for them.
According to colleagues from the Prensa Latina bureau here, every time they pass by the place they are surprised that there are always flowers at the feet of the bronze sculpture, built on a pedestal of light gray granite, with only the word "Fidel", and in relief the Cuban archipelago.
It has become customary, they say, that not only Cubans, but Muscovites and from other parts of Russia come here, and not only veterans and new fighters, but young couples who come to show their children the place. "They tell them, this is Fidel, this is Cuba," said Germán, the head of the correspondent's office.
The reference of the journalists of PL came out because this morning there were no flowers left by passers-by. They deduced that it had surely been cleared to give more luster and solemnity to the ceremony.
The monument was inaugurated on November 22, 2022, by Presidents Diaz-Canel and Putin. In his inauguration remarks, Putin said of Fidel: "His whole life was dedicated to the selfless struggle for the triumph of the ideas of good, peace and justice, for the freedom of oppressed peoples, for a dignified life for ordinary people and social equality. He was one of the most brilliant leaders of the 20th century, a legendary personality."
