"We feel great satisfaction for the stable level of political and diplomatic relations that we have with Syria, a brother country, with long-standing ties, which in 2025 will be 60 years old," said the member of the Political Bureau and Vice President of the Republic, Salvador Valdés Mesa, upon receiving the Syrian ambassador to Cuba, Ghassan Obeid.
Cuba is aware of how much the Syrian people are suffering, subjected to a war that has already lasted 13 years, which has caused that nation many problems in the economic and social orders, in the quality of life of the people, said Valdés Mesa, who assured that "we will always be at Syria's side."
He thanked the Syrian support "to our draft resolution, which we are taking to the United Nations, to put an end to the blockade," and the statements of the Foreign Ministry and the Parliament of that country to exclude Cuba from the list of nations allegedly sponsoring terrorism.
According to the Presidential website, the Vice-President expressed the hope that one day the war will end, that there will be peace, and that the rights of the Syrian people and the Middle East will be respected; that there will be no holocausts like the one unleashed by Israel on the Palestinian people, which affects Syria, its neighbors and the world.
"We have very strong, very old ties, and we consider our relations strategic," said Ghassan Obeid. "We stand by Cuba, and we also thank Cuba for standing by Syria all these years."
He expressed the willingness to strengthen ties between the two countries, "especially in commercial and economic sectors, to combat the inhumane sanctions and blockade against Cuba." He referred that this blockade is identical to a set of sanctions against Syria, and commented on the need for "a common struggle."
