CARACAS, Venezuela. -The Venezuelan people showed yesterday -in an act of sovereign participation- that social and political victories can also be won in peace, with the vote, and through dialogue.

Thus, citizens flocked to the more than 15,736 voting centers throughout the country, in the context of the regional and parliamentary elections held the day before in this South American nation.

The process, which took place in peace, allowed the election of more than 500 public offices, including governorships, legislative councils and the Parliament.

In this way, the gigantic electoral celebration was “a victory for Venezuelan democracy, and to guarantee the political plurality established in the Constitution”, said Minister of Defense Vladimir Padrino López.

On this occasion, people exercised their right to vote as a constitutional instrument to decide their future and, above all, to settle political differences in a peaceful manner. In this regard, it should be mentioned that 54 organizations with political purposes, as well as indigenous people, representing the diverse tendencies of the country, participated.

In general, the process combined electronic technology with physical support, and counted with the presence of national and international observers.

In order to coordinate the reception and channeling of information during the electoral process, a Situation Room was installed at the headquarters of the Supreme Court of Justice, which is part of the commitment of this power with democracy.

In spite of the constant attacks against this process, such as the attempted attacks against military, political and opposition leaders who registered, as well as against the Simón Bolívar hydroelectric power plant -the largest in the country-, located in the Guri Dam, the right-wing extremists could not stop the progress of this vital space for self-determination.

These were the 32nd elections in 26 years of the Bolivarian Revolution, which makes the country -valued President Nicolás Maduro Moros- the one with “the freest, sovereign and democratic elections in the last one hundred years”.

As part of this journey, the leader announced that he will present to the new National Assembly a comprehensive reform of the electoral system, focused on the creation of communal circuits as a basis for permanent consultation. In addition, this update intends to modernize and adapt the system to the reality of Venezuela.

Undoubtedly, the main result of the elections lies in being palpable evidence of the commitment of the government and the people with the defense of the constitutional order, legality and the desire to solve disputes by peaceful means.
