The biotechnology sector is a successful example of the relations between Cuba and China, a space that has yielded results and has shown its strategic character, considered First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, in a meeting with representatives and leaders of the main institutions that make up the collaboration between the two countries in this sector.
The President told the Chinese businessmen that relations in the biotechnology sector "have been consolidated, have been strengthened, and set an example and an example of what we can do in other sectors of the bilateral relationship".
He added that they are based on two fundamental pillars: inter-party relations and the consensus reached between both Presidents. It is aimed at building a community of shared future, which is already a reality, he said.
According to the Presidency's website, more than 80 Cuban and Chinese institutions and companies participated in the meeting, and 34 agreements were signed related to the establishment of new joint ventures, the creation of new science and innovation laboratories, the acquisition of raw materials, and the local production of medicines that have a direct impact on the health of the Cuban population.
One of these entities is already assimilating the production of 81-milligram aspirin, which is aimed at heart patients, so that in 2026, the population will be able to have this medicine, said Mayda Mauri Pérez, PhD, president of the BioCubaFarma business group.
Once we have established the production of aspirin, we will also transfer the technologies for the production of some antihypertensive drugs, such as captopril, lisinopril and the combination of lisinopril plus hydrochlorothiazide, added Mauri Pérez.
These are drugs that have an impact on the 12 most demanded products by the Cuban population, that is, on the needs of six million people.
The 13th Working Meeting of the biotechnology sector between Cuba and China took place within the framework of the official visit of the Cuban president to that sister nation, to participate in the ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese people against Japanese aggression and in the world anti-fascist struggle.
