Act One. Curtain rises: A woman, visibly moved, approaches the people, makes promises, and speaks of tyrants and dictators. Curtain falls, and behind the scenes, the same woman appears, calling for a military invasion of her own country.
Act Two. Curtain rises: The protagonist attempts to demonstrate—with "democratic" interest—the incompetence of a supposedly failed state. Curtain falls: Her extremism led the U.S. government to block the entry of COVID-19 vaccines into Venezuela in June 2020.
Act Three. Curtain rises: The U.S. Secretary of State nominates her for the Nobel Peace Prize. She is awarded it. Curtain falls: after "winning" it, she dedicates it "to the people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support for our cause." Yes, the same man who has some 1,200 missiles pointed at the South American nation.
The protagonist of the play, María Corina Machado, was made up and advised by the White House, which also financed this elaborate performance and, above all, promoted it to the world.
Meticulously crafted, the figure who appears on stage to be the antithesis of Venezuela's constitutional president, Nicolás Maduro, is just a pawn being moved by Washington to achieve—so far without success—its destabilizing goals.
Thus, this award is nothing more than one of the many ways to demonize Chavismo and justify rampant neoliberalism, the privatization plans unveiled in the last presidential elections, and the active promotion of external aggression, such as the more than 1,000 unilateral coercive measures that are strangling the Venezuelan family economy, by the leader of the Vente Venezuela party.
Machado disregarded the results of the 2024 presidential elections even before going to the polls, as her running mate, Edmundo González Urrutia—who only contributed his name to the ballot—did not sign the agreement recognizing the election results, which had been signed by the other candidates since June. This would be her formal announcement of the coup attempts that would follow, especially with the support of terrorist commandos, organized crime groups that attempted to disrupt the post-election tranquility in the country, paid for by the extreme right and its most loyal ally: the United States.
What has been rewarded then, the betrayal of the country, of its people? Peace? Does the far right even know the meaning of that word? It would seem not, as her political career has been dedicated to achieving "regime change," always through violent means, far removed from the "tireless work to promote the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy," as claimed by the Nobel Committee.
In this regard, several international figures have stated that this is a Nobel Prize for War, or in other words, against peace. Meanwhile, Hinterlaces reported that 91% of those surveyed expressed their rejection of María Corina Machado, which is significantly higher than that of the rest of the country's political leaders. After the pantomime of extremism, the curtain fell without applause.
