"Once again, the voice of sanity is raised from the United Nations to denounce the criminal blockade of the United States against Cuba. The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has been forceful: he called for the immediate lifting of sanctions and warned that their tightening – including fuel restrictions and extraterritorial measures applied in 2026 – is putting lives at risk," said, through X, the member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Party, Roberto Morales Ojeda.
Furthermore, he added that "the international community cannot remain indifferent to a siege that, according to the UN itself, seriously affects the access of the Cuban population to essential services such as health, food, water and medicines. "It is not about politics: it is a matter of human rights," he asserted.
Morales Ojeda described "Türk's diagnosis as "relentless," and referred to: "deterioration of health indicators, critical shortage of medicines, hospitals and care programs for vulnerable patients on the verge of collapse." Likewise, he insisted that "energy restrictions have aggravated blackouts and hit food production, transportation and all economic activity in the country hard."
Furthermore, he emphasized: "Faced with this scenario of profound social and economic deterioration, the High Commissioner described the measures as incompatible with basic human rights principles. His conclusion is unequivocal: 'These sanctions must be lifted immediately.' The world’s position, expressed time and again through the UN, is clear: no to the blockade. Yes to humanity," Morales Ojeda stated.
This Monday, via the same social media platform, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, urged the immediate lifting of the sanctions imposed by the U.S. government against Cuba, warning that their expansion is causing serious humanitarian consequences and endangering the lives of the Cuban people.
Türk emphasized that the measures taken against the island generate broad and indiscriminate effects that are incompatible with fundamental principles of international law.
In that regard, he urged companies and financial institutions to avoid overly restrictive compliance practices that further limit humanitarian activities, and called for greater international cooperation to prevent a worsening of Cuba's social and economic situation.
