On Thursday morning, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez—First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic—received José Miguel Mejía Abreu, Secretary General of the United Left Movement (MIU) of the Dominican Republic.
At the Palace of the Revolution, the leader commended his visitor for "the spirit with which you have come to visit us." He did so because, in his view, Mejía Abreu had arrived to "reaffirm the solidarity of the Dominican people and the United Left Movement with Cuba."
President Díaz-Canel stated with absolute firmness: "I believe that the historic ties between the Cuban and Dominican peoples are indestructible."
"We will continue working, and doing so with greater intensity between the two parties," the leader affirmed to a friend known for fighting battles—someone who, in January 2024 (when he was also received by Díaz-Canel), shared a conviction that defines his outlook on life: "One cannot simply sit before the Wailing Wall. You have to get in the fight."
The Secretary General of the United Left Movement (MIU) of the Dominican Republic remarked on Thursday: "I wanted to come to Cuba." His motivation, as he explained, stems from the difficult moment the Cuban Revolution is currently experiencing. Mejía emphasized: "It was necessary to tell Cuba, 'Here we are,' and to reaffirm the historic ties that exist between Cuba and the Dominican Republic."
He spoke of "indelible historic ties" and recalled figures such as the chieftain Hatuey, Máximo Gómez, and José Martí—individuals whose stories forever link the two nations.
Emilio Lozada García, Head of the International Relations Department of the Communist Party of Cuba's Central Committee, was also present on the Cuban side during the meeting, which was marked by warmth and sincerity.
