As part of his tour of Havana’s central historic district, Obama and his family visited the Plaza de Armas, one of the first squares built in the Spanish villa of San Cristóbal de La Habana.

Accompanying the President is City Historian Eusebio Leal Spengler, who described the adjacent Castillo de la Real Fuerza, where the colonial governor lived.

President Barack Obama arrived in Cuba earlier this afternoon, March 22, for an official visit. He will tour other historic sites and meet with Army General Castro Ruz, President of Cuba’s Councils of State and Ministers in the Palacio de la Revolución, in addition to participating in a baseball game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cuban national team, and presenting an address to the Cuban people at Alicia Alonso Grand Theater, which will be broadcast nationally.

President Obama ended today's public activities speaking with the press at the U.S. embassy, saying than the day was a “historic” one, and that during his stay he intended to share his “vision” for a “future that is brighter than the past.”
