TEXTO: Once completed, at the end of 2016, works underway in the resort town of Varadero to install a 110 kilovolt (kv) direct buried cable line, could provide light for 45,000 rooms across various tourist facilities, some 20,000 more than currently exist.

An increase in lodging capacities in accordance with the development of so-called eco-tourism, features as part of the long term plans for the tourist sector in the Hicacos Peninsula, with the cable line contributing to guaranteeing this service, reports AIN.
Currently only 1.5 kilometers of cable remain to be installed and two of the three sub-stations are yet to be constructed to complete the works, explained Jorge Alejandro Rodríguez Azpeitia, director of the local tourist services company.

Works as part of the Taíno Road phase, between the Aguas Azules and Arenas Doradas hotels are currently being carried out, however slight delays are being experienced due to changes in technological equipment and horizontal drilling given contracting difficulties.

The110 kv buried cable line is currently one of the largest investment projects being undertaken by the Ministry of Energy and Mines on the island, costing over 85 billion pesos, beginning in early 2013 and scheduled to be completed by 2016.

The line runs for some 20 kilometers from the town of Siguapa, along the Varadero access bridge, until close to the Hicacos Point, after which is crosses the Southern highway, and a good part of the resort’s historic centre.

Jorge Alejandro noted that over 1,000 high technology lights have been installed this year, with the same number scheduled to be fitted before the end of 2015, providing better illumination at a lower cost.
