Varadero.— A set of new rooms in Las Conchas Hotel, which will have a total of 470 by the end of this month, and the reopening of another 1,982, significantly improved after undergoing complete refurbishment, are just some of the new offers available at the resort this winter season, noted Ivis Fernández Peña Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) representative in the province of Matanzas, during a press conference. The official also noted that management of tourist services in the territory especially the Varadero resort has been reporting positive results throughout the year, with hotels registering a 78% occupancy rate.
She noted that the province saw the arrival of one million visitors for the eighth consecutive year, a figure which is predicted to increase to 1,500,000 in 2016.
Among actions designed to improve the resort’s tourist product and satisfy clients’ demands she mentioned the expansion of so-called optional offers, both on land and at sea. Peña added that works are currently underway to build a golf course and hotel in the Carbonera area, while the construction of an aqua-park and crystal tower – providing greater leisure and adventure options for tourists - are currently in the planning stage.
The Mintur representative continued, noting that alongside these efforts the non-hotel sector and routes connecting Varadero, Havana and Matanzas, as well as other nearby cities of historical interest, are also being developed.
With just over 50 hotels and 20,565 rooms, the holiday resort of Varadero is well positioned within the country’s tourism sector, and benefits from other key features of the industry, such as safety, culture, history, and the general attributes of the Cuban people, commented Ivis.
She confirmed that Canada is currently the main emissary of tourists to Cuba, followed by national visitors, Germany, the UK, Argentina, Russia, Chile and Venezuela. Diversifying our market is the main aim of sector authorities, added Fernández Peña.
The Mintur representative also said that the Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport, one of the country’s 10 international airports, has undergone works in order to handle the increase in arrivals (23 more per week), and make its hotel offers more attractive.
