Antigua, Guatemala – Cuban Minister of Justice, María Esther Reus, stated that the country’s anti-drug strategy combines prevention and confrontation, which has resulted in positive results since 1988.

“Cuba’s situation in the struggle against drugs is different to that of many other Latin American nations. We have achieved results by applying a strategy that combines prevention and confrontation,” stated Reus, who, with the Cuban ambassador, Roberto Blanco, attended the 1st CELAC Ministerial Meeting on drugs, held in Havana.
Reus commented that in Cuba the struggle against drugs involves all of society and mass organizations. She stated that every member country of CELAC has its own particularities and that Cuba supports respect for unity within diversity on all issues, including this one. She highlighted that, for Cuba, the protection of human beings is fundamental, adding that public health, as related to drugs, was also discussed during the meeting.
Cuba is prepared to collaborate and offer its experience in the struggle against drugs, commented Reus. In view of the fact that it is a universal problem, these types of meetings help to share different strategies that CELAC nations have implemented.
