SANTIAGO DE CUBA.— The collection of paintings entitled, “Con Fidel” and photos entitled, “Fidel y Raúl en la Sierra”, exhibited in the former town hall to mark the 56th anniversary of Fidel’s proclamation of the triumph of the Revolution, from the very balcony of this building, have been especially welcomed by the population of this city.

On opening the exhibition, the renowned Cuban artist, Nelson Domínguez, explained that his series Con Fidel, dedicated to this Heroic City on such a significant date, focuses on Fidel at different significant moments.

The collection includes 18 works of various formats painted on canvas, using a mixture of techniques, and other drawings, also of varied techniques, using charcoal...which will be exhibited here for about a month and then I plan to take the exhibition to other places.”

Meanwhile Fidel y Raúl en la Sierra is a selection of about 50 photos from the over 120 taken by the Spanish photojournalist, Enrique Meneses, over a period of about eight months in which he accompanied the Rebel Army in the untamed mountains of the Sierra Maestra, which are being exhibited for the first time in Cuba.

Heroine Vilma Espín Guillois was commissioned in late 1957 to take Meneses to the Sierra Maestra in order to elaborate a report on the guerrillas and their main leaders, which was published in three editions of the French weekly news magazine, Paris Match, in the spring of 1958.

Meneses, who passed away in Madrid two years ago at the age of 84, entrusted his personal archive to his compatriot, Juan Carlos Moya, who on appreciating the historical value of the photos to Cuba, presented them to the government in Santiago de Cuba.
