OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF CUBA CENTRAL COMMITTEE

Sunday, April 26, some 3,300 polling stations in 149 townships conducted a second round vote to elect delegates to Municipal Assemblies of People’s Power, since no candidate received the required 50% support in the first round held last week. The elections proceeded as planned to complete the selection of representatives.

A second round was required in 1,166 constituencies in which multiple candidates were nominated. The names of the two candidates who received the most votes April 19 were listed on the ballot for the second round.

More than 1.2 million citizens were eligible to vote, and according to the National Electoral Commission (CEN), 941,041 had cast their ballot as of 5:00 pm. Polling stations closed at 6:00pm.

Previous reports from the CEN had indicated that 1,165 constituencies would be going to a second round, but a voter in Santiago de Cuba challenged the validity of the vote in a district there, leading to an investigation by electoral authorities in the region. In coordination with those responsible on the national level, the first round vote was annulled and the election repeated yesterday.
