The remains of tropical storm Erika moved across the country this weekend which, along with a low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico, brought much-needed rain to all of the nation’s regions.

The dissipation of this hurricane season’s fifth system led to less rainfall than was expected, but several localities did receive more than 100 millimeters within a 24 hour period.

Yinelis Bermúdez at the Meteorology Institute’s Forecast Center reported some of the sites with significant precipitation, including Tunas de Zaza, 153 mm; Meyer, 146.7; Caracusey, 143.6; Banao, 138; and Mapos, 137, all in the province of Sancti Spíritus.

Also notable were 129 mm at the Gilbraltar channel in Camagüey; 124 in Trinidad; 122 in Condado, and 112.5 in Guasimal (Sancti Spíritus); 112 at the Yaya reservoir in Guantánamo, and 110 at the Virgen water station in the province of Granma.

Within just eight hours yesterday, August 30, 101 mm fell in Güira de Melena, Mayabeque.
