
With more than 400 delegates on hand, the 10th Ocean Sciences Congress, Marcuba 2015, opens today at Havana’s Convention Center, and will continue through the week. Participants include experts from Cuba, the United States, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Spain, Colombia, Australia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Italy, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Britain.
Argelia Fernández Márquez, executive secretary of the organizing committee reported that opening ceremonies will include the awarding of Cuba’s National Prize for Ocean Sciences, to recognize outstanding scientific work in this field.
On the agenda are seminars on four central themes: human impact and risk management; climate change; conservation and biological diversity; as well as biotechnology and food security.
An exposition fair has been mounted to share research results, products and services of Cuban entities.
With a view toward integrating Ocean Sciences, the conference is sponsored by the National Oceanographic Committee, the Cuban National Aquarium and other institutions.
