CIEGO DE ÁVILA.—Cuban and international experts gathered at the 12th International Symposium on Arthroscopy, underway at the Doctor Antonio Luaces Iraola Teaching Hospital in Ciego de Ávila, described the event as the ideal scenario for the introduction and development of new minimally invasive surgical procedures.

The province of Ciego de Ávila is one of the best examples in this field in the country, with more than 1,500 operations of this type carried out since 2003 on patients with various ailments principally in the knees and shoulders.

Dr. Osvaldo García Martínez, one of the coordinators of the event together with the Cuban Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology, noted the importance of the theoretical and practical sessions underway, in which leading experts on arthroscopic surgery on joints such as the elbow, shoulder, wrist, foot, knee and hip, exchange their experiences.

Referring to the latter, he explained that as part of the program, the first hip operation in the province using this procedure would be undertaken by Dr. Christian Wurning, from Austria.

García Martínez described the clinical teaching sessions, lectures and surgical demonstrations as a valuable space “for the exchange of knowledge regarding the latest arthroscopic surgery techniques in the world.”

“The training of specialists in the territory and the country, encouraging research in this field and developing exchanges with international institutions are also objectives,” he added.

Among the first patients evaluated as part of the event was Yaneily Prieto Bonachea, a 19 year old with a posterior dislocation of her right shoulder, who said she was confident about the procedure and the expertise of the multidisciplinary medical team attending to her.

The event, which runs through April 23, includes the participation of experts from several Cuban provinces and Austria, Italy, Canada, the United States and Switzerland, led by Edward, Peter and Danielle Buess, who have repeatedly participated in these exchanges.
