Trinidad, Sancti Spíritus.—-When in early 2015 the idea of repairing the highway to the community of San Pedro - an old modest town located just beyond the Escambray mountains - began to take off, instead of waiting for the machines to prepare the road for the subsequent repair to arrive, people from the local and neighboring communities decided to take on the task themselves.
Such has been the prevailing philosophy of the comprehensive attention program to mountainous and remote communities being implemented for the last year and a half by the provincial government in collaboration with affiliated entities and organizations, with the vital support of the citizenry.
Thus far the initiative has reached some 130 areas across the province – including constituencies with over 20 People’s Councils – where over 800 issues have been resolved, including some long-standing concerns.
Mileydi Peláez García, Provincial Assembly of People’s Power secretary noted that the works have strengthened the presence of state institutions in the community, which has benefited over 600 health, education, culture, trade, social, sports and recreation, aqueduct and food entities; all of which are now in better condition to provide their respective services.
Young Dr. Yohenia Rodríguez, who is completing her social service in the picturesque but remote town of Méyer, noted that the formerly run-down clinic where she works was “left like new, in a matter of days.”
